Once a common sound inland during the Spring and Summers of my youth,it's now very rare to hear that evocative, distinct call that, 60 years later, never fails to stir something deep inside me, for whatever reason. If the decline in numbers continues at the current rate, it's predicted that the species will be extinct in 10 years from now. Fortunately,an investigation is underway to determine the reasons for the decline with a view to reverse the trend and increase populations. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0016g6d (fast forward 3.5 minutes)
