Yes. Best taken with a 'pinch of salt' for now methinks. Almost 3 years since Leslie Griffiths promised to introduce legislation to control Slurry storage and Spreading. Still waiting for that!!

I was saddened to hear of the sudden passing away last week of Malcolm Edwards. Malcolm was an ambassador for Fly Tying in Wales and could often be seen at Game Fairs, displaying his expertise at the Fly Tying stand. Also, like myself, he was a keen Springer Spaniel enthusiast and I first met him some 25 years ago on a local Pheasant shoot where his dog performed an 'eye wipe' by retrieving a strong runner which my dog failed on. 25 years later we met again, when I decided to refresh my fly tying skills by attending classes held by Ammanford Angling Association. He made tying some intricate fly patterns look so easy, such was his skill. A true Gentleman, he will be sadly missed.

I've been reliably informed of some serious poaching being currently investigated on the River Tywi above the village of Rhandirmwyn. The offences are alleged to have taken place within the confines of the Hydro Electric Construction Site where no public access is currently permitted and where work on the project continues. The section of river where the offences are alleged to have taken place is near some old disused fish traps below Llyn Brianne. Apparently, some photos, showing a very large number of dead Salmon and Sea Trout with evidence of gaff wounds, have been circulating around the area and were seen by a local farmer who then informed the police who in turn informed NRW. The total number of fish taken is alleged to be in three figures with some very big fish included in the total. The company undertaking the construction of the Hydro employs mostly, if not all, German and Czech workers. Also, a little further downstream at The Junction Pool, where the Doethie runs into the Tywi, people wearing Hi-Viz jackets have been spotted 'fishing'

I think the 'jury is out' on this one. I guess much depends on the volume of water required to produce a sufficient electrical output to meet demand and the length of time the demand is required. What effect this has on the fish remains to be seen.

Back in the 1960's when the rivers were alive with fish, apart from the worm, daytime spate fishing for Sewin on a receding flood, for most of us,(in my case a schoolboy) meant spinning. During that time, the Mepps in all its various colours, was the 'go to' spinning bait. Then came the natural Quill Minnow with its 3 sets of treble hooks. In a choice of colours i.e. green, brown and blue, this for me proved to be the deadliest of all at the time. Cast up and across, it's action seemed irresistible and caught me my first Sewin. Since then we've had Irish Lane Minnows, Flying C's and the popular Rapalas. I've caught sewin on all these and the Rapala in all its various colours and sizes is definitely very attractive to both Sewin and Salmon. Quill Minnows and Irish Minnows have since been reproduced, but they never equalled the original versions in weight and action. Is the Rapala the best lure so far?

This incident has prompted me to e-mail the Welsh Minister for the Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs( Leslie Griffiths) once again !! It's almost 3 years since she finally acknowledged, after several previous river pollution incidents and media coverage, that Agricultural Pollution was a continuing issue while the industry continued to ignore the voluntary guidelines on slurry storage and spreading. She therefore announced that she would introduce Regulation on Slurry Storage and Spreading but gave the farming industry time to adjust by having a 12 month 'consultation' period. This 'consultation' period ended in the Autumn of 2019. In January this year I e-mailed her again to question why no regulations had been introduced to date. Her reply began with the usual ' I take this matter very seriously' and she continued by saying that she was currently working with the agricultural industry i.e. Farming Unions, to reach an agreement( Good luck with that !!). I look forward to her reply to my current e-mail.
